1. "Denatured alcohol is also abundant for those who don't mind spending a half hour boiling a cup of water." A well designed alcohol stove is surprisingly effective. I use a Trangia cook kit, which wastes much less heat than the typical gas or butane stove. You can even make your own: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/photonstove/stove/HighPerfAlcoholStove.html http://home.att.net/~ofuzzy1/alcohol.htm 2. Santorum's proposal to eliminate civilian NOAA web reports: Ain't gonna happen. Santorum is a bit over the edge on this one, and doesn't have any support in congress. Which doesn't mean you shouldn't write your representatives. Nor does it mean that you should take this opportunity to vent your various political biases. 3. SOSpenders PFDs: I bought one on sale two years ago at West Marine, thinking it would be a nice hot weather alternative to a heavy foam PFD. I rarely use it, because I just don't trust it as much as a foam unit, and because I discovered a nice mesh-back PFD that's comfy and cool. I keep it on my little sailboat. mike -------------------------- Michael Edelman mje_at_spamcop.net http://foldingkayaks.org http://findascope.com http://kittysaysmoo.com *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
