A well designed alcohol stove is surprisingly
effective. I use a Trangia cook kit, which wastes much
less heat than the typical gas or butane stove. You

2. Santorum's proposal to eliminate civilian NOAA web
reports: Ain't gonna happen. Santorum is a bit over
the edge on this one, and doesn't have any support in
congress. Which doesn't mean you shouldn't write your
representatives. Nor does it mean that you should take
this opportunity to vent your various political
biases.

3. SOSpenders PFDs: I bought one on sale two years ago
at West Marine, thinking it would be a nice hot
weather alternative to a heavy foam PFD. I rarely use
it, because I just don't trust it as much as a foam
unit, and because I discovered a nice mesh-back PFD
that's comfy and cool. I keep it on my little
sailboat.
