You are right, tidal currents around islands are sometimes completely non-intuitive.  There is no good way to just look at a raw chart and guess from the landforms.  However, there are manmade cues.

The way to tell is to look for the channel marker buoys and lights.  I don't know if you are in an IALA-A area (green right return) or IALA-B area (red right return).  However, find out, as that marker buoy will show you which way the flood tide is going.  If you are going with the flood tide, the red (IALA-B) or green (IALA-A) buoy should mark the right side of the main shipping channel.  

If there are no markers, you will just have to do a lot of paddling, and find out.  Have fun!
