Hey Craig,

Fall through Spring (with the occassional exception of January and early February are the ONLY times to paddle. In summer you bake to a crisp and the heat and glare make you tired and cranky before the day is finished.

Down here in the Bayou City (that's Houston, TX to you northerners, Spring starts the third weekend in February. I ALWAYS celebrate spring by visiting Choke Canyon to see the wintering ducks before they take off and (hopefully) get to see the sandhill cranes doing their mating dance. I usually get to paddle in my shorts and T-shirt. This year was no exception and we got to watch turkey gobblers displaying for the hens while paddling on the Frio River off Choke Canyon Reservoir. We also enjoyed numerous wading birds, javelina and deer as well as green jays and a few other Mexican birds including the cara cara. This is also the westernmost place to find the American Alligator and some of them can be 10 feet or more.

Since then I've been on trips on Lake Stubblefield, Old River (one of the channels where the Trinity once flowed), West Galveston Bay (to see breeding brown pelicans, gulls, all kinds of heron and ibis, seaguls, and terns) and finally a wonderful camping trip at Martin Dies State Park.

I would have gotten in more paddling but I had to go to California and killed 2 paddling weekends. I still have several more trips planned before summer hits and I have to paddle only early in the morning, late at night, or out of state.

So I think you just live in a antikayaking place and need to move to a better one.

I have albums at

And I let Yankees come down and enjoy spring with me. Choke Canyon is always the third full weekend in February. So don't be mad - Just come on down. Then you can invite us up for summer.

Marilyn,

Location, location, location. :)

I'd move south but I just have a sneaky feeling that the cross-country
skiing might be a tad slow in your area. Although, if we have another
winter here like the last one, you may have me as a neighbor by next
year.

I haven't been in Houston since I retired from Exxon's merchant fleet
just before ol' Joe took command of the Valdez.

Thank you for the invitation.

Well, here in Victoria, BC, I like spring, summer, fall and winter for sea
kayaking - the same can be said for fishing here too! Hardly ever too hot
and hardly ever too cold. :-)
