What Peter described sounds like Denzo tape. It's a thick sticky tape about 4-5 inches wide. The idea is that you turn the damaged kayak upside down (or at least expose the damaged area), dry it as best you can, slap on a patch of Denzo tape, and go on your way. Obviously it's a very temporary repair. The version of it which I got is a roll of it. I cut patches separated them with waxed paper, kept about 6 of the patches in my kayak repair kit. Never needed them, fortunately. Pre-cut patches backed with foil or some other material would be much handier. The Denzo tape is sticky both sides, and it will make a mess of your hands if you handle it very much.
