"Hey". I've been out of touch for a while, due to work... - can't wait
for retirement in, ohhhh, 20 or so more years :-)

Anyhow, I've had my eyes on a Thule roof rack system and have been
waiting for a sale since Christmas. A guy at one of the local stores
said that Thule almost never puts their stuff on sale. As a gut check,
should I believe him? Have you folks found that to be true about Thule?
Some of you have been in retail situations where you sold the stuff,
haven't you? Comments?

While waiting, I've been casually looking in the local "Trading Post"
for a used set, but perhaps I should also start looking on e-bay or
elsewhere.

I couldn't find any discount sales anywhere (3 years ago). Though, they
were available locally in roofrack shops (I belive there are 3 of them in my
"village"), for the same price as on e-bay or slightly cheaper, especially
considering USD/CDN excange rate and high shipping costs if I were to buy
them with bars. Eventually I've opted for a used "towers" (legs) in
Classifieds, complete with locks and keys, plus new brackets (specific item
for each model), since it was impossible to get used towers with the
brackets exactly for my model, plus a pair of bars from roofrack shop. The
total cost was, I believe, 1/4 of MSRP.

I spent quite a bit of time try to buy my Yakima system on-line (E-Bay,
retailers...etc.), and I finally ended up buying them from my local
supplier here in town. After adding in freight charges to the online
sale prices for used items, they weren't any cheaper than buying new.
And I didn't have to wait to get them. Luckily one of the local
suppliers went out of business as I was getting ready to buy the last
set of rollers, and saddles, so I ended up saving about 60% on them!
Purely luck of the draw that day!

I don't think I've ever seen a Thule sale. Racks show up fairly often on
ebay. AAMOF, I think I bought a Yakima rack with bike mounts there for a
ridiculously cheap price.

If you haven't spent your REI rebate yet, it's worth 20% off on one
purchase.

The EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) stores in New Jersey
have "club day" sales in spring (just passed) and fall
where everything is 20% off and they carry Thule.
We've gotten several things there as we upgraded to
fit a new vehicle. The Jersey Paddler has a big event
in March where Thule parts are 20% off also (and Thule
has a booth with their reps there). We've also bought
on eBay (new) with success - although probably more
like 10% off after shipping.

I just received a newsletter from BACKCOUNTRY.COM that they are having a
20% off sale for their Yakima racks...here is a link to that page.

I have received good service from this supplier.
Hope this helps.
