Hi Guys,

I have a group of 8 students (+ 1 professor) that want me to take them on a
rather rigorous 5 day trip. I have a good amount of experience with the South
Carolina coast, which is where we are from, but I am thinking that The NC
Coast might be a better Idea. Any one have an old 5 day trip plans they could
shoot me? Okay I'm lazy and hope someone else can do the work for me:-).
Actually, I'm finding it a little difficult to find comprehensive information
on the legal camping spots on the NC coast.

It needs to be at least 60 miles, and most of it should be in fairly protected
waters (these guys will have never been in a kayak before the training program
that starts the week before). I do need to get them out in some surf, at
least one day, but nothing too soupy.

There is a good set of paddle trail maps for the Carteret County area
that is available for free by calling (252) 726-8148 or by e-mailing
a request to vacation_at_sunnync.com. The maps were produced by the
Crystal Coast Canoe and Kayak Club and include many routes in
protected waters behind the barrier islands. I'm sure that you could
stitch several of these together to get a 60 mile trip.

Camping is available on Bear Island (Hammock Beach State Park) and
all along Shackleford Bank and the Core Banks (barrier islands that
make up the Cape Lookout National Seashore). Here are a few web
sites to get you started:

If you need to rent boats for some of these folks, Barrier Island Kayaks in
Swansboro is a great place. Lamar Hudgens is a BCU 5 * paddler, and he runs
the place. His store is near Bear Island, and the White Oak River. He
might be able to help you plan a trip and help with some of the logistics.

The White Oak river would give you the protected waters you're looking for
(for a few days anyway), and there's plenty of surf around Bogue Inlet and
Emerald Isle. Camping on Bear Island is wonderful - it's a lovely place.

Somebody else mentioned the free maps from the state and the Crystal Coast
Canoe and Kayak Club - those list camping sites in the area. There are
several places to camp along the White Oak, Huggins Island across from
Barrier Island Kayaks allows camping (I think legally), Bear Island has
camping.

Good luck.

Dee
