I can understand that because trucks, lawnmowers, and leaf blowers rarely try to occupy the same space you might be paddling in. However, in many urban paddling environments there may be other boat traffic that do share the same space. A few years ago I was paddling with a group of primarily recreational kayak paddlers and one woman strapped a waterproof walkman as soon as we launched. Our route took us through a cut through an island that was the only navigable path for many miles so there was a *lot* of powerboat traffic.
