In Santa Barbara, you can try Santa Barbara Paddle Sports. They rent a lot of SOT's but I think you may also be able to get a closed deck boat from them. There are numerous outfitters that take you to the Channel Islands for a day or for camping. You need to have your own camping gear though. They do provide the SOT's and transportation to and from the island. There is good camping on Santa Cruz Island, but the others are so - so. Lots of wind, no shade, and big uphill hikes at Anacapa for example. Southwind Kayaks in Irvine (about 45 minutes on the freeway south of LA is a good shop for renting boats and gear}. They also lead some camping trips to the Channel Islands. Local campsites are almost impossible to get. They are on a first call first get basis and reservations open up 90 days before your requested date. If you are going in the middle of the week, you may be able to find some cancellations. If you are going to be somewhere between LA and Ventura Counties, you can always post a message on the CKF email list to see if someone can loan you a boat for a paddle with them.
