Hi All,
Mention has been made that the `gas pedal' footpeg system is no longer
on the market.I would like to point out that Seaward kayaks has been
manufacturing a `gas pedal' system for many years and preceded the
Cascade system. Also the Seaward system is made of aluminum, not
plastic.
Yes, I do work for Seaward but it is the only gas pedal system that I
know is in production.

Prijon Seayak also has gas pedal system (at least it had it 3 years ago when
I had this model). Seaward rudder is good, and even slightly balanced, but
its blade doesn't have a hydrofoil profile (unlike Smart track blade) -
which affects the performance when it really matters. But then, the ideal
performance would be with no rudder at all ;-)... Seaward rudder (all parts
of it) is mechanically more reliable than Smart track (or many other
rudders), this is for sure. Seaward rudder also has downhaul line - the
feature peculiar to very few rudders out there. Seaward kayaks are
definitely made with some sailing in mind - they even have flat spot for
mast step, though it's in the wrong place. Too far in the bow for "Spirit"
sail, and too aft for Pacific Action sail or australian hinged designs.

Some manufacturers are using Smart Track pedals with Kajak Sport Navigator
blade system - sliding blade, the idea "borrowed" from Australian designer
few years ago, though Kajak Sport is bragging now that they were the first
:-)...

Hi Chris,

Prijon has also been using a gas peddle rudder system for many years. It's
plastic but a friend of mine uses Prijon boats in his rental fleet (and a
few Seaward boats as well) and both systems have held up really well.

Are you the Chris I met at the demo day at Braddock Bay (Rochester, NY) a
few weeks ago?

There are manufacturers in Germany who have been manufacturing these
since at least 1990, quite likely longer; one of them is
http://www.zoelzer.de/ (with whom I am in no way affiliated).
