Hi All,
I'm not going to defend the Seaward rudder system, except to say that it
available in parts, tracks and pedals, rudder, and a control package of
lines, each part available separately and easy to retrofit.
However, I will correct a serious misconception. The flat spot on the
foredeck is for mounting a compass. It was never designed as a sail
mount.

It's nice to have this option for compass either; but this flat spot is
about 5 ft from the backrest , - or compass has to be placed that far?

Not only do I agree with what Melissa said, but you will also find that the
closer the compass is to the paddler, the more susceptible to seasickness
they become.

It is tiring on the eyes to constantly change focus from far to near.
Having the compass that far forward allows you to keep it in your vision
without refocusing. After awhile (many miles) you are able to maintain your
compass heading without conciously looking at the compass.
