A few years back after a day of fishing in West Matagorda Bay a friend and I were stopped for a quick rest and stretch on a tiny island. As soon as we were there a small pod of 4 to 6 dolphins started using the island to herd baitfish. It was an amazing site. Sometimes you would see a small wave form with the shad and other fish foaming in front and then a dolphin would explode out of the wave and other times from a completely smooth surface the surface would start to boil with fish and the dolphins would explode upwards. There were times the dolphins were coming right up on to the island. Got up at 4a this morning and did a quick training run down river in preparation for the Colorado 100. The sky was real clear and I saw four shooting stars. The river was up a bit but, surprisingly clear and between the increased current and being able to pick out the smart route through the sandbars I was able to make short work of the trip. Will be shooting for two short trips next week in the 6 to 7 mile range and one longer trip around 19 miles. Then the next week I hope to do an even longer trip to the beach. That could be a 30 mile plus trip depending on the route I take. Let me know if you can join me for any of them.
