I have the M2A which has a Ni-Cd battery and a AA backup. As far as I
can tell, there is no reason that the AA tray should be less water
resistant, since it has the same O-ring etc.
I used my radio this past summer on a 10 day trip down the west coast
of Vancouver Island. It was used regularly (4+ times a day) to listen
to the weather forecast and was then used for several minutes talking
to the coast guard. In my second conversation with the coast guard,
the power level was definitely down and they were having a hard time
hearing me. When i switched to another radio, there was no problem. I
was able to charge the radio with a solar charger and it was back up
to snuff. On an extended trip, I would not want to go without either
a back up battery source (AA tray), charged spare battery, or an
additional radio (we carried 3 for three of us).
