I must have a half-dozen VHF handhelds around here somewhere but last summer I went to West Marine and bought an Icom M32 with a "fast" AC charger (still on West Marine's web site for $149). I don't have much need for a VHF when I paddle lakes and rivers but I figured that it would be handy for salt water. And it has proven to be entertaining to listen to the "emergencies" last summer while we were paddling around Orcas Island. And the weather. The M32 is small enough to fit comfortably into my PFD pocket (VHF one side, FRS radio on the other) and it is at least reasonably waterproof for kayak use. (I've dropped it into shallow salt water and it never missed a beat.)
