Amidst all the verbage there seems to be a failure to understand the philosophical problem. The problem is simple enough. To what extent are we our brother's keeper, what are the limits to one's intervention in another's life and, at what point does that intervention become oppressive. One thing is certain. There is no lack of people wanting to control every aspect of our lives all under the guise of making it safer and always because they believe that others are not competent to make decisons for themselves but they, on the other hand, are. Apparently "freedom" just means having the freedom to tell others the limits to their freedoms. It becomes all the more insidious when augmented by the force of law. Patrick Henry said it best, "Give me Liberty or give me death." Noble sentiments now consigned to the dustbin of history.
