G'Day, Thought some of you might be interested in two expeditions that aim to cross from Australia to New Zealand. Its not been done yet in a kayak although two attempts have been made. Many people think its impossible as there is no significant prevailing wind or current to provide assistance. Anyway the third and fourth attempts are about to happen in November and December. Andrew McAuley is going to try in a Mirage and is reckoning on a 30 day crossing. His web site is http://www.andrewmcauley.com/tasman.html James Castrission and Justin Jones 'The Knox-boys' are the other team giving it a go in a custom made double. They have added 3m to the stern with a 95cm high pod or 'cabin' for sleeping and they have expanded the forward section making it 30cm deeper for storage. At present they are planning to depart on the 9th December from the Australian National Maritime Museum, Cockle Bay Sydney. They have a web site http://www.crossingtheditch.com.au but it seems to be off the air at present. The distance is about 2000km across sea that can be pretty wild on occasion. All the best, PeterO (And best of luck to Andrew and the Knox-boys) *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
