Well there is something special about going out for a paddle with your own
home-made paddle.
When I loaded up my glass boat today, it was so covered with sawdust that it
smelled like a traditional arctic kayak! And when I got in the water, with
the first dip of the paddle I got to see the white wood transform into a
golden honey color. As I made my way out of the harbor, each stroke elicited
a ker-plop from the water, I figure because I have yet to round off the tips
of the paddle.
For the first time since summer ended, the ocean mentioned to me that winter
is on its way. The swells weren't big, but they were rather confused and
it's strange how conditions always look more ominous with the sun hiding
behind the clouds. I played around in the swell and churn for a while trying
to get used to the new paddle and headed back into the harbor for more
practice. A couple attempt at rolling then became wet exit practice, oh
well.

Picture of me with my new paddle I've named Cedarick on my website

Mark,

As you get more experienced with a GP, you will probably start using a canted stroke by tilting the top edge of the blade towards the bow. This will cause you paddle to dive quickly into the water until it bites or grabs. That's when you put power to the paddle.

If you use the canted stroke, your blade will enter the water silently whether it's tips are rounded or not.

Welcome to the club, you'll never go back.

Steve
