I can't believe how unprepared people are for an emergency. Even my in-laws - their two acres covered in a foot-thick carpet of boughs, trees down everywhere, a sailboat knocked over from its support - never bought a generator, even though their power takes a hit all the time. I was amazed how many folks came into the store seeking propane, candles, and flashlights. One dear old lady, her British accent still as strong as the day she emigrated to Victoria, spoke to me in soft tones, "Dear young man, do you have any little bottles of propane left?" I can't make a hot cup of tea." I'd hidden a few bottles from the earlier folks hording them first thing in the morning before I arrived for the evening shift and gave one to her, to her great delight. Anyway, I do hope we paddlers are as prepared for home emergencies as we are generally for kayaking contingencies. I'm still really upset I didn't make the storm (as in paddled in it). I did make it out a few years ago for a Southeast storm of the century, but missed the Westerly one recently. Oh well, can't paddle them all.
