I respectfully disagree. There's a fair number of SOF in this area.

If you are in the Boston area look into the PondScum - based on Walden
Pond - a group worth travelling to meet. Should you get the chance to
spend time with some of the pond scum crew (particularly Dan Asmussen,
Will Bigelow, Dan Segal, Turner Wilson, Cheri Perry), do not miss it.
To me Turner stands in a class by himself as an instructor.

In the fall we've got the arctic kayak symposium at Mystic Seaport.
I hosted 8 or 10 gatherings getting up to 30 SOF boats. Mystic's
weekend has taken over for the Northeast's get together.

Six of the 14 board/advisor committee members for QajaqUSA are in the
northeast.

Willow Kayaks on Cape Cod sold somewhere around 50 SOF boats commercially.

The north shore paddlers network (http://www.nspn.org) have a fair
number of SOF builders.

There are also groups of SOF paddlers in southern Maine, northern
Vermont, Montreal, Connecticut, and NYC.
I'm sure there are more - those are the ones I know how to contact.

As for buying a skin. It depends on what you are building. If you are
building a folder I would follow the building/skinning methods of Tom Yost -
http://www.yostwerks.com

If you are building wood with nylon or polyester contact George Dyson,
in Bellingham WA and get him to send you fabric I think this is the
current Dyson information:
