I would suggest the redundancy issue is a big plus.
Capable units are quick to get you a fairly exact fix
that can be fairly quickly transferred to a larger chart,
or radioed to someone you'd like to know where you are....

The plotting and waypoints for safe harbors/landings/bail-outs are also
nice for a certain margin of safety, especially if you find yourself  
in fog.
They are also a fairly worthwhile source of distance-made-good,
rate of travel, etc.  The sensor units also provide redundant  
barometric readouts
for those carrying a Kestrel or wearing a Suunto. It's nice to know  
when the fronts
pass...and what that might bode for more localized conditions.
