Well after having spent a week in Hawaii relegated to only dial-up internet
access, I decided I should do something about the waste of excess pixels on
my website. I've probably cut down all my pages to a third of what they
were. Hey, I'm new to this stuff, so I didn't know what I was doin'! My pics
are still big and I'm sure my pages are still slow but they've gotta be
better than before. No new content right now, but I'd like to know if it
helped any of the dial-up users out there. I have been enjoying seeing where
all the different visitors come from who have visited my site.
Hopefully it provides more pleasure than consternation.

Hey Mark,

As a victim of a lousy 36K dialup connection, let me say that I had no
trouble accessing your great website and I enjoyed the pictures a lot, particularly
the Traditional Kayak gathering. I'm also a "larger" paddler and have
recently switched over to Greenland style as well. I'm trying to finish my first
skin-on-frame boat but am having trouble locating a good source for skin. Here
in the Northeast, skin-on-frame culture hasn't really taken root yet. I envy
you Left coasters!

I respectfully disagree. There's a fair number of SOF in this area.

If you are in the Boston area look into the PondScum - based on Walden
Pond - a group worth travelling to meet. Should you get the chance to
spend time with some of the pond scum crew (particularly Dan Asmussen,
Will Bigelow, Dan Segal, Turner Wilson, Cheri Perry), do not miss it.
To me Turner stands in a class by himself as an instructor.

In the fall we've got the arctic kayak symposium at Mystic Seaport.
I hosted 8 or 10 gatherings getting up to 30 SOF boats. Mystic's
weekend has taken over for the Northeast's get together.

Six of the 14 board/advisor committee members for QajaqUSA are in the
northeast.

Willow Kayaks on Cape Cod sold somewhere around 50 SOF boats commercially.

The north shore paddlers network (http://www.nspn.org) have a fair
number of SOF builders.

There are also groups of SOF paddlers in southern Maine, northern
Vermont, Montreal, Connecticut, and NYC.
I'm sure there are more - those are the ones I know how to contact.

As for buying a skin. It depends on what you are building. If you are
building a folder I would follow the building/skinning methods of Tom Yost -
http://www.yostwerks.com

If you are building wood with nylon or polyester contact George Dyson,
in Bellingham WA and get him to send you fabric I think this is the
current Dyson information:

Dyson, Baidarka and Co.
435 W. Holly St
Bellingham WA 98225 360- 734- 9226

moderator of the basically defunct baidarka mailing list since 1992(?).

There is also the Delmarva retreat that has been going on for 18 years.
