It is not just the temporary events (actually we did poorly with Comet Hale-Bopp and generally with the Leonids meteor shower) but we southerners have the best night skies all the time! Down here the Milky Way is high overhead in the winter, not some hazy object low on the horizon. We also have the Magellanic Clouds this time of year and the best globular clusters. We also have far less atmospheric haze and it is easier to get away from light-polluted regions. Yet another reason to come down here for a paddle!
