I paddled the mouth of the Savannah river today on a fossil hunt. I clawed my way a few miles up river against a falling tide, heavy chop and a stiff headwind. The thunder run began when I mounted back up in my wife's Tern 14 for the return trip. I still had all the conditions mentioned but now they were pushing me. I strained hard to see if any container ships were approaching and began to cross the channel at a shallow ferry angle. With no traffic I had time to hang out in the middle of the channel and surf the following sea. What a blast. With almost no effort I had run after run racing down the face of the swells. As I approached the far side of the channel the fisherman on the sea wall seemed a bit curious and perhaps concerned with the sight of me. Kayakers propelled by sticks playing in the shipping lanes must not be a cultural norm here just yet. Perhaps this is for the best.
