A garbled distress message was picked up Friday evening (NZ time) from the area that Andrew McAuley was expected to be, but SAR were unsure that it was from him. Aircraft and surface vessels have been looking for him since. Tonight's news has reported that rescuers are heading to what is believed to be the up-turned hull of his kayak, 14 km from Milford Sound, his destination. It is over 24 hours since the distress call was heard. His family is at Milford Sound, where he was expected to arrive tomorrow morning. Here is hoping that he turns up safe.
