One reason there are regulations about maintaining a "respectful"
distance from marine mammals.... *human* safety (these are both recent
events).

In this incident, the Japanese fishermen were attempting to guide what
they believed to be was a stranded whale back out to sea.
Unfortunately, the whale did not understand and one of the poor rescuers
lost his life. It appears that after attacking the boat, the whale then
when for the fisherman.
