Way out of line, Chuck. Scott's other major point was that he sees a lot
of paddlers out there with very poor skills ... and that they need more
training and experience in battle conditions. How about meeting the
argument made head-on, instead of cherry-picking statements out of context?

I see Scott's mesage as a Euclidean thing, there is no royal road to kayak
safety. One must spend the hours, not the dimes, to be a safe operator, group
member or leader. It's not the gadget, but the judgement. Like all purveyors
of one flavor of Kool Aid or another, one must not be afraid to blend. That is
my message. I don't think Chuck was out of line, we all see things
differently, it's those in lock step I'm (fill in the blank) of.
