Since we had our roll we improved our stack of gadgets a lot, but none have yet been needed. That time everything safety-wise (kayak, manual pump, cell phone, warm clothes, et cetera) - all that floated away. Since then we've upgraded with everything we could think of, including VHF, electric bilge pump (that would have been a blessing that day), since then we have just tested it occasionally! We would never have tried rounding Skye, Scotland, with nothing but North America on our right, a bit too far off for safety, without all that heavy gear. As things turned out we used the VHF once, for the weather forecast - not really essential, that's all. But had the weather been different, had the seas been heavier, had the currents been worse, had the sharks and Orcas been more interested in us, we might well have needed them all!
