Has anyone documented that these boats could plane? I have Dyson's video and it is clear that the boat in question did not plane even when paddled by an Olympic paddler. Equally important, do kayak people have a different definition of planing from that used by naval architects. If they do (and it has been suggested on this list in the past that paddlers have their own idea of what planing is) then what is it? Finally, in my studies of Inuit kayaks none of the Aleut kayaks studied have as low resistance at speeds above 5 knots as the best of the Greenland kayaks. Equally interesting is that modern Olympic kayaks have lower resistance than either native type and yet no claims of planing. Despite the narration to the contrary, Greg Barton is not able to make the baidarka plane on flatwaster.
