John, I have the Optio W20 and it's screen is quite a bit brighter than the earlier Pentax cameras. It's not fantastic in the bright sun ( I don't think that exists), but you can see it. It's not a complete guessing game of what you are shooting. Prior to purchasing it, the camera store where I bought it let me take it out into the street on a very sunny day to try it out. It's only a little harder to see while bouncing on textured water in a kayak.
