Hey Mon Ami,

The Canadian Government has a boating guide for sea kayakers - not sure if
you want to take a look (I have the actual printed copy too):

It reads in places almost exactly like a French Canadian would speak
english. Amusing perhaps.

Hi Doug.... interesting brochure. It's certainly not easy to place all the
waters of a country as vast as Canada into four categories so It's somewhat
simplistic but it gets the basics out of the way and leaves room for
exceptions. Thanks for the posting. :)

Also... thanks for the posting of your contacts with the mishap near
Chicago. Nice follow-up. I've found that large waves on fresh water tend to
be steeper; perhaps it's the density of salt water. For whatever reason, I
prefer salt water as long as I don't have to wear eyeglasses.

I think these guides, like Chuck's cold water pamphlet, all help, though this
canadian safety brochure is a long read. There was a bumper sticker campaign a
few years back on the American east coast I think - something about wearing
your PFD. Not sure what happened to that effort. My favorite tactic when I
interview paddlers who have a harrowing tale of survival to tell, is give them
a free copy of SK's Deep Trouble (if they are new to the sport). I'd like to
see a little more on paddling safety show up on television once and awhile,
seeing as how that's where a lot of people keep their eyes glued.

As for the follow-up on Lake Michigan, I thought it commendable that the men
spoke freely of what they had learned. I've made some contacts in the past
where I had to plead and then wrench information from the paddlers. Not fun. I
think Mike and Paul had a genuine struggle out there, and kept it together in
real waves, steep and breaking high. They probably didn't need us doubting
their integrity. I certainly will not regard Lake Michigan as "just a lake"
anymore.

In federal agencies they require employees to be bilingual,. Eng/Fr. It
could've really been a French Canadian with less than perfect English, - a
person with normal brains is usually more proficient in one language than in
all others that he has happened to master :-) ... This formal requirement
of Eng/Fr bilingualism nowdays looks more like those Buckingham guards'
bearskin hats in England. Seems like the second common language of this
country (after English) is not French, - at least over the last few decades.
