West Marine sells the Katadyn Survivor 06 manual reverse osmosis desalinator for $800. Their catalog says it provides "enough water to keep a person hydrated in one hour". Maybe you can rig a system to pedal power it while you paddle. They do produce good water in my experience. It's the larger 12vdc models that cost $2k and up. I would certainly take one on any Sea of Cortez trip.
