No, not talking about paddlers who debate rudders online. :-) No, I'm talking about managers of big box stores. And staff. Specifically, the ones I work with where I seek secondary employment. See, there's been lots of cutbacks, staff shortages, doubling of responsibilities, and impossible expectations put on staff and management since the store opened a year ago. Some managers have cracked. Staff have fled. Welcome to the modern world of shareholder-answerable, corporate-driven retailing. Okay, nothing new. Well, a couple of the staff, and a growing list of management are suddenly getting a lot more mellow all of a sudden. Couldn't figure it out at first. Some of the managers actually started to talk and act all humane-like again. Joyful evenings watching pup seals. Weekends sneaking around with their own spouses, close to the water - like real close. Yeap, kayaking. Turns out, some of them have recently taken up sea kayaking. So too some of the staff. And, for some reason, have been coming to me for advice now and sharing their exuberance and new experiences. Hmmm. Maybe corporations should consider more, this human resources potential found within sea kayaking. How about an employee kayak-purchase plan? A weekend paddle get-together rather than the usual golf games? Mandatory summer sea kayak trips for all managers? The potential is huge.
