[Paddlewise] Border issues in Texas: think Rio Grande

I am taking the liberty of forwarding this message to Paddlewise as I
recognize there are others among us who have paddled and enjoyed the Rio
Grande River - through Big Bend National Park and other places.

I personally am horrified by the idea of a fence, on many levels.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to join this demonstration (time,
distance...) but in case there are some others out there interested,
here is the information (forwarded from another list):

Dear Friends and Family,

Happy 4th! I see this as a good day to send this.....

As you probably already know, I am taking an active part in opposing the
border wall. I am attaching a press release and a flyer about a rally in
Roma, Texas on Saturday morning, July 14, that I am helping to organize.
I am calling upon all my paddling friends and their friends to come and
join me on an early morning paddle on the Rio Grande . It may be the
last chance you get to see it this way. It is truly a beautiful
river--rich in wildlife and the cultures of two countries touching. We
need enough boats on the water to make an impressive showing on a camera
screen. We are hoping to bring national attention to an issue that needs
to go beyond the overwhelming opposition that occurs as you get closer
to the border.

Or if not to paddle, please join in the rally at 10 am in the historic
city of Roma. The trip there is well-worth your time. We need at least
150 people to reach across the international bridge hand-to-hand to show
that there is an age old connection between Texas and Mexico that should
not be severed by a wall. Let's drink a margarita in Ciudad Miguel
Aleman afterwards.

Please come. Bring your boat or rent one or I'll try and find a spot on
one of the boats down here. You are also invited to stay here at the
ranch for the weekend--but I can't promise everyone a bed. Come down
Friday, and we'll drive out to Roma from here early Saturday morning.

If you can't make it, and want to show your opposition to the wall,
please write letters to your representatives. I can send you some links
and info that will make it relatively painless. And please pass this on
to your email list.

Thank you for your support. Betty

water, everywhere. Galveston, Texas
