I spent a number of years working the bridges of various ships and boats (from 35-foot salmon trollers up through factory fishingboats and 765-foot oil tankers. My experiences with spotting small boats at sea have made me very skeptical about the efficacy of aluminum masts and even most "radar reflectors". In general, except on very flat seas with the mate-on-watch looking at the radar, most everything yacht-sized is invisible; most of it is lost in the "clutter". Putting aluminum foil in your hat as a radar reflector is not quite as effective as putting it there to foil the alien bran scanners. At least in my experience. Ok... I haven't got a lot of experience with alien brain scanners. But I'm sure they're out there!
