Cut off the knot and glue and sew the cord ends together with some
overlapping.  I didn't try this, because I think that usual "old underwear"
symptom will appear at some time - the bungey will stretch irreversibly, so
you'll have to cut and sew again. Make sure you know  how to retrieve the
end of the cord when (not if, but when) it escapes your hands and slips into
the sleeve.
