As my Klepper has two really big sponsons, some 19 feet long, I have
some experience with sponsons, and sure they prevent the boat from
sinking, if waterfilled, but they are not a panacea that solves everything.

Tim's small ones are about as big as the inflatable PFD we have anchored to
our emergency pack, not much help when things get really bad!

PFDs on everyone is a much better life saver than two small floats on
a kayak, canoe, or bigger boat!

The picture of Tim's daughters paddling a canoe in dead calm waters
says nothing about their possible use in a normal emergency, which very
rarely happens in dead calm - rather the contrary. If they are supposed to
do anything really good, they should run like like those on a Klepper, from
bow to stern, on the outside of the hull.
