I attended a talk by the Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation many years ago. Someone asked him when Massachusetts would adopt a progressive pedestrian law like California's (requiring drivers to stop when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk). His reply was that MA's pedestrian death rate was lower than CA's. A fact that he attributed to MA pedestrians knowing they were taking their life in their hands every time they stepped off the curb :) Doug - did you ever live in MA?
