The difference is told by our sigs: he's in Southern California and I'm in northern Oregon (and paddle in BC a lot): the water up here is always colder, and often coming out of the sky. Survival ashore up here is almost always dependent on avoiding death by hypothermia. That PFD is a lot of insulation to lose.
