Regarding the calculations vis-`-vis rent vs. buy, one pernicous thing about the American Lifestyle is we buy a truck big enough to pull our stuff around on vacation, then we drive it to work alone. So one might factor in the extra cost of 10 mpg the other 98% of the time, or of maintaining a extra towing vehicle. Well, actually because until about 15 days ago I owned a farm, the pickup truck is just one of the (now former) vehicles. So it only gets driven when it's needed. Probably another form of extravagance but there it is.
