Hi Dave,

That is a very fine way to pull together what every one has been
saying.

I wasn't trying to imply anything special with my Inuit post. I sent
this to Rob.

Hi Rob,
I wasn't meaning any particular message with that post other than
telling our friends in Australia what that "sewn in" stuff was refering
to. True we have more options in modern times. The southwest
Greenland hunters dealt with their problems in the best ways
available to them.
Best regards,

I would add to that, that the Eastern Arctic Inuit, with their long
paddles, big boats and hefty coamings, sometimes "D-shaped",
were not rollers. It is my opinion that their very long paddles were
an absolutely necessary response to the possibilty and dire
outcome of capsizing in ice-choked or near-freezing waters. I use
and have made long paddles and know something about them.
Having a long wooden paddle in the water is like having your boat
equipped with an outrigger on both sides of the boat.
