It takes only a very slight edge-to-edge curve along the length of 
the blade to make to water shed smoothly as a paddle is drawn 
through the water. The obvious ridge along the length on the 
powerface of the Alaskan paddles is more than is necessary for the 
job. 

If the back of the paddle is left flat, the paddle will exhibit an airfoil 
effect and generate "lift" when one is sculling or rolling with the flat 
side down.

I am one of those paddlers with the "garage full" of home made 
paddles.
