Sitting on the shelf/in the drawer they need to be recharged after a couple of months. Maha has new NMh battery line called imedion which has very low self discharge and comes charged up. They claim that after a year the a fully charged battery will retain 85% charge. The con is that they only have 800 mah AA batteries at this time. My charger that I use now is a Maha MH-C401FS which has 4 independant charging circuits and does AA and AAA batteries from 1 to 4 at a time, sizes can be mixed.
