Peter... I think you're not likely to find an all-band SW receiver with 1khz digital tuning in the size of a matchbox but you might want to look at some of the QRP (very low power) amateur receivers. When they're small they tend to be designed for only one band (14 and 7 mhz are common). This amateur QRP transceiver ( http://www.fix.net/~jparker/wilderness/sierra.htm) is pretty small and has the advantage of both transmitting and receiving (in case of emergency only) and you can build your own band module for whatever frequency range(s) you need. Cost is about US$400 for a kit with six ham-band modules. There are others but I think the Kaito and the Sangean are still smaller receivers.
