I think the show may have been given by a "paddlewiser" - at least
one of the group you are talking about was in touch with me through
paddlewise after we returned from our trip last year. We were the
last people to see Brian Grant that July 19th afternoon.
There is a news article (with a few errors - there were 3 of us and
he did not talk to us..)
http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/voices/story.html?id=65bdb9a5-65d7-42a8-ab24-bc68ac626c86

Our trip report can be found on my blog at:
http://www.islandnet.com/~mjackson/pblog/2006/07/trip-journal-july-17-to-27.html

The conditions that Brian Grant was setting off in that afternoon
were nasty - we had chosen not to paddle that day due to the
conditions and forecast - and getting worse. We were experienced and
reasonably skilled paddlers (Paddle Canada Level 4) and felt that
conditions were not safe enough to go around the "cape of storms" in
a gale... we stayed put in camp. I have heard that Brian Grant did
not have a VHF or weather radio, though I cannot confirm this. I
think Doug Lloyd is working on an article about this event.

I think your point about knowing limitations is key - there are lots
of conditions that we should not be in, especially if there is no
back up. Having paddled over 550 km of the west coast of Vancouver
Island in the past two summers, I can attest that it is beautiful,
still wild in many places and an amazing paddling area. You do need
to be willing to work around weather windows. Last summer we had 3
weather days and this summer we had two.
This summer's trip is described at:
