Hi Folks, After the whirlwind that is Freya Hoffmeister stormed through on her way to circumnavigating NZ's South Island, we had Babs Lindman here for a couple of days as she attempts her own trip. She started in Picton, on the island's northern coast, and had a good run down the east coast before landing at Sumner, Christchurch where my wife, Mary, picked her up. I was up covering the arrival of Freya, who did a few rolls after 32 hours and 165 kilometres in one sitting! Babs spent the day buying a replacement camera and sorting maps etc before we had a BBQ and studied maps for her next leg. I launched her at Sumner yesterday morning into a flat grey sea and light drizzle as she went around Banks Peninsula. She phoned this morning from Flea Bay (much more pleasant than the name suggests, it is a marine sanctuary), and I will meet her over the next few days, giving her a hand to land and launch through the dumping surf that smashes the coastline south of here. A lovely lady, she is very humble about her skills and is very respectful of the sea. Paul Caffyn was very impressed by her skill in surf when she stayed with him before departing. Her blog is worth checking, but I can't actually remember the link, and this computer is having a tantrum so Google is the best bet. Justine Curgenven, author of the "This is the Sea" series arrives in a couple of weeks, so the process continues. We also have Gordon and Morag Brown, some of Scotland's top kayak coaches, staying so it is a busy time. Anyway, the waves beckon, so I'm off for a play.
