Thanks Joan - you beat me to the punch, though I don't know much about the Q-boat personally. BTW, I phoned back the kayak store, as yesterday, when I looked at the Tempest 165, the price tag seemed too good to be true - it was. The rain had dampened the ink. The price was $1900.00 regularly, marked down to $14000.00 or so, not $900.00. Saddnened, even if I wasn't sure about the kayak, I was cruising "Usedvictoria.com" later today and found Doug Alderson's original homebuilt/designed plywood S&G going for $500.00. I paddled the west coast for a few years with Doug paddling in this boat so I know the boat is sound, if not a bit heavy. I'll test paddle it next Saturday and probably buy it; it'll get me on the water and be a good boat for one of my teens when they grow out of their sit on tops. It has a skeg and center board, so should be fun compared to my Nordkapp for sailing with a Spiritsail. As for us "over 50" paddlers that took up kayaking later in life, it is too bad though never too late. For those of us over 50 who have been paddling over the last 30 years or more, the only sad thing is the nostalgic memories that taunt us of days gone by when we truly felt invincible in our kayaks -- and somehow survived that notion, the later being a good thing I guess. I was looking forward to the 45 year mark - still lots of stamina and strength, but lots more wisdom and sea savvy combined. Poor health robbed me of a few of those high-output years, but there are still good days to come. See the following for the "big boy equivalent of an Anas Acuta." I've paddled it, and it's not really like the Anas - but then, I'm not really in the size range that boat is meant to fit. http://www.atlantickayaktours.com/pages/retail/boats/vcp/Q-Boat.shtml Joan *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
