A group of us are planning a trip to Quatsino Sound in July, launching from Coal Harbor. Two questions: -- We are finding some conflicting information regarding campsites on Drake island and Ildstad islands. The McGee book describes Ildstad islands as a "good picnic stop" and implies you can only camp between the two islands during "extreme low tides" (no other camps are mentioned); but goes on to describe Drake as "a great place to stop overnight". However, other sources suggest camping on Ildstad -- and make no mention of any campsites on Drake at all. Can anyone shed any light on this or suggest other places a reasonable day's paddle from Coal Harbor (noting that, after exiting Quatsino narrows, we'll be gradually paddling into a flood tide)? -- Speaking of a flood tide: the current flowing through Quatsino narrows is well-documented, but I can't find much comment about currents in the sound itself. Observing the three long arms branching off the end of the sound and relatively narrow width of most of Quatsino sound, it looks like there's a potential for a reasonable amounts current there. Anyone know how fast it flows? Feel free to answer back channel if you prefer.
