In this case the questions I'd like to ask the victim are: What kind of hatch was it that failed and on which model kayak? Why did it fail? Was it operator error in installing it incorrectly? Or maybe just wave landing on deck popping it off? Maybe a wave squeezing a flexible hull and popping it off? Might that failure happen again in similar circumstances? Was there any back-up flotation in the stern compartment? This is often overlooked by many paddlers. Did the hatch fail suddenly or just leak enough to slowly flood the stern compartment (while the rear bulkhead(s) prevented pumping or bailing from the cockpit)? For those that don't know about it already, in our websites "Flotation" manual there is a detailed discussion about flotation, the various ways to get enough, and what has been known to go wrong with each of several flotation systems. It also discusses the best back-ups for the different flotation system as well.
