G'day, While brushing up on rescue techniques and practice I started wondering how on earth one could rescue someone who had flipped and was unconscious? Can anyone provide references or advice? I think this is what the "Scoop Rescue" was developed for. Best done with two to three boaters to the rescue. Second boater stabilizes and then tows the first boater while the first boater deals with the unconscious or immobilized person. Depending on the circumstances, the first boater may have to leave his or her boat to perform the rescue, in which case the second boater simply tows. A third boater comes in handy to collect gear. There is a trapped paddler rescue (also known as the hand of God) when a paddler could not wet exit. I have actually used this rescue once on a river and seen it used by a friend when a person panicked trying to wet exit. Personally I practice this, in addition to other rescue, several times a year. Please refer to the following link for a description of this and other rescues. _http://www.atlantickayaktours.com/pages/expertcenter/rescue-skills/Rescue-Ski lls-10.shtml_ (http://www.atlantickayaktours.com/pages/expertcenter/rescue-skills/Rescue-Skills-10.shtml) regards sid While brushing up on rescue techniques and practice I started wondering how on earth one could rescue someone who had flipped and was unconscious? Peter - take a look at Sea Kayaker article at http://www.seakayakermag.com/2007/Oct07/Technique01.htm and the website for this technique, which is http://www.bowrollrescue.info/wp/ and the video demostration at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fejjZ28_YA Those of us who know John Martin, who devised this skill, have practiced it with him and found it to be relatively easy to do and very effective. When I taught whitewater kayaking, I often watched my students attempt to roll and get close but not quite make it. I would paddle up to them and grab their stern and just twist with my hands. If they had the ability to get at least their head to the surface, my assist would often bring them up. Since I was at the stern, the student didn't always realize that I had helped. John's technique is a big step beyond that.
