Our cig pack type Cannon digital camera was in a Cannon underwater
housing... and was taken into the ocean today... by someone my 17 year old
son was with... and the housing became "about half full of water". They
took it out of the water, took the camera out, and opened the batter and
memory card compartments, and took out those items and wiped the camera off.

When my son got out of the water about an hour later ... the camera was not
working. He wiped it off and charged up the battery to make sure that was
not the reason for no functions working... Still not working.

He called today and asked for suggestions...

I suggested that he rinse the camera off with fresh water, and evacuate of
the water as possible... perhaps three or four times, and then leave it is a
warm but not hot place for a week or so and try to fire it up one last time.

I suspect it is done for... but does anyone else have any other suggestions?
(I cannot see any value in sending it to Cannon.... in my experience most of
the electronics companies cannot fix things for a reasonable fee.... )

thanks...

Your advice was about as good as anyone's given the circumstances. They
should not have waited an hour to get the camera into fresh water; the
sooner, the quicker. Depending upon the quality of your water, you might
want to use distilled water if you have it, bottled water otherwise, or
water out of the faucet if you have to. The point is to dilute any salt
deposited in the unit as much as possible before anything gets corroded and
then slowly dry out the device.

The best place to dry an electronic device (I think) is a nice spot where
the sun will shine onto it for a few hours a day and the dark hours are
still warm. Give it a week or two before applying power. The urge to just
try it is strong, though. Try to hold out. I have had devices come back to
life after a few weeks of sitting in a warm, dry place.

Good luck,

It's dead. Write it off.

Even if it does come back, it now has cancer. It may work for an hour, day
or even a longer but it will die, and it will choose to do this at the time
that it is the most inconvenient to you. If you can retrieve any of the
pictures on the memory card do so, and then go shopping for a new camera.

My expectations are low for this... but worth a try of course... .and perhaps
a lesson for my son...

thanks...
