I am forwarding this information from other sources. If you are in the
New Orleans Convention Center you will want to check out this new
exhibit of a tandem kayak used for competing in the Great Mississippi
River Race for Rett Syndrome, May 5-31, 2001. Pictures are at the
foundation's web site: www.RettSyndrome.org
<http://www.rettsyndrome.org/> .

The hull was designed by Nick Schade; it has a 24" beam and a 26'
length, weighing in at 100 lbs. Here is a little description of the
kayak:

It's a two person kayak. The dome can be attached to the rear deck and
put in place on the water. The sleeping chamber was water tight, with
the dome's edge overlapping the cockpit rim-further secured with a nylon
band that had a couple elastic cords in it. Breathing holes were made
waterproof with an external flap of neoprene. It was really hard to
roll the Double Helix, mostly because of the large, flat rear deck. The
dome made it easier to roll when there wasn't a person under it. It
became harder with a person inside because of the lower center of
gravity...and what would finally happen would be that the dome and
person under it would fall out...which is a good thing when you think
about it.

The race distance was 2348 down the Mississippi River from Lake Itasca
to the Gulf of Mexico.

Whew, makes me tired to think about it.
